This operant conditioning program from PsychLab On-Line by Professor. Emeritus John C. Hay, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and is reproduced here with his generous permission.

The bird can perform four different behaviors. It can peck, hop, flap, and turn. You can change the behavior you are reinfocing by clicking once on the name of the behavior. To reinforce the bird for perfoming the behavior, click once with your mouse on the food bin which will then dispense a pellet of food for the bird to "eat".

The program offers a culumaltive recorder. It measures the repetitions of the behavior that the bird offers in a sixty-second time period. It also registers the number of times you clicked, paired with the number of times the bird actually repeated the reinforceable behavior during the sixty second interval.

This program simulates the way trainers click and reward a dog for the performance of a desired behavior. With this program the single click of a mouse button serves as a marker for the correct behavior. The click triggers the food bin to automatically dispense a treat.

The program is offered here to give you the opportunity to practice and improve the speed and accuracy of your clicking skills. The more precise the timing of your clicks the more precise the dog's (or bird's) awareness of the behavior for which he is being rewarded. Accurate timing of the clicks increases the likelihood that the animal will repeat the behavior.
