BOOKS ESPECIALLY FOR OR ABOUT CHILDREN

Most of the reviews and descriptions below are from Amazon.com where these books may be purchased. Of course, independent booksellers and libraries are also great places to find these and other books on the subject of children and death.

Books for preschool and young school age children:

**About Dying: An Open Family Book for Parents and Children Together. Stein, Sara Bonnett. Photograpsh by Dick Frank. Walker and Company, New York, NY, 1974
This is an excellent and unusual book for young children and their parents. It has text for parents and text for children on facing pages. This book is part of a series developed by the Center for Preventative Psychiatry in White Plains, NY.

**A Special Place for Charles: A Child's Companion Through Pet Loss. Moorhead, Debby, Broomfield, CO, Partners in Publishing, 1996.
A gentle story about the death of a family’s dog

Growing Time. Warburg, Sandol. New York, Houghton-Mifflin, 1969.
About the stages of a dog’s life from puppyhood to old age. Best for children 6 and older.

**Koko's Kitten. Patterson, Francine, Dr. Scholastic, Inc. Reading Rainbow, 1985.
A charming, true story about a gorilla name Koko who loves a kitten who dies.

Petey. Tobias, Tobi. New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1978. Rosalie. Hewett, Joan, Lothopp, 1987.

Sad Isn't Bad : A Good-Grief Guidebook for Kids Dealing With Loss

The Saddest Time. Michaelene Mundy, R. W. Alley (Illustrator), Abby Press, 1998

Sad (What Does It Mean?). Tester, Sylvia Root. Elgin IL:The Child's World, c.1980.
This is a good book for a child to read to understand that people do feel sad and why sad feelings do occur. The book also lets a child know that comforting helps these feelings. The photographs that show sadness are excellent. A sad child would feel like they were looking in a mirror. The only part about the book that I did not like was that the family decided to take the child away from the home while the pet died and did not let the child attend the t burial. I think a child would understand death better and be able to release some grief by attending the burial. It's a chance to say "goodbye" that we all need

**The Accident. Carrick, C., New York, Clarion Books, 1976.
For children age 6 and up. After his dog Bodger is hit by a truck and killed, Christopher must deal with his feelings of depression and guilt. "The subdued illustrations -- their details warmed by washes of golds, browns and tans -- are realistic and feeling. An honest look at grief with no tidy answers." -- School Library Journal IRA/CBC Children's Choice –

When a Pet Dies. Rogers, Fred (Mr. Rogers). New York, G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1988
n this useful book from the First Experience series, the affable star of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood helps children share feelings of the loss of a pet while offering reassurance that grieving is a natural, healing thing to do. A sensitive and sensible first book about death. -- The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

**The Tenth Good Thing About Barney. Viorst, J., New York, Aladdin Books, Macmillan, 1971.
A family remembers their ten favorite things about their cat, Barney. Reading this book with a child who has experienced a death provides a for families to talk together about a pet or person who has died.

**The Dead Bird. Brown. Margaret, New York, Harper Collins, 1983.
‘Finding a still warm but dead bird, a group of children give it a fitting burial and every day, until they forget, come again to the woods to sing to the dead bird and place fresh flowers on its grave. An excellent handling of the subject of death in which all young children have a natural interest.

**Books Barbara has used actively in her clinical practice with children.
